Audi has officially unveiled the new Audi A2 e-tron, reviving one of the brand’s most distinctive nameplates for a completely new generation of electric car.
Rather than simply recreating the original A2, Audi has reinterpreted the idea behind it. The new model is compact on the outside, designed to maximise interior space and engineered with efficiency as one of its defining characteristics.
In fact, Audi says the A2 e-tron is the most energy-efficient series-production vehicle it has ever produced, with its most economical specification achieving a WLTP energy consumption figure of just 12.8kWh per 100km. Depending on the version, maximum WLTP range extends to 646km.
The result is a very different kind of Audi EV and potentially one of the most significant additions to the manufacturer's electric range.
A Modern Interpretation of the Audi A2
The original Audi A2 was introduced at the turn of the millennium and became known for doing things rather differently from conventional compact cars.
More than two decades later, Audi has brought the A2 philosophy back, this time as a fully electric model.
The new A2 e-tron uses short front and rear overhangs alongside a relatively long 2.77-metre wheelbase, creating a cabin-focused shape designed to make efficient use of the car's footprint.
Its exterior is more crossover-like than the original A2, but several of the same ideas remain: an unusually tall cabin, a sweeping roofline and a clear focus on aerodynamics and packaging.
Audi UK describes the new model as an electric reinterpretation of the original A2, with its recognisable silhouette recreated for the e-tron generation.
The Design Is Driven by Aerodynamics
One of the biggest stories surrounding the A2 e-tron is something that isn't immediately visible: how carefully its body has been designed to move through the air.
The new model has a drag coefficient of 0.24, which Audi says is the best aerodynamic figure within its compact model range.
A number of details contribute to that figure.
The underside of the vehicle is largely enclosed, while a controllable cooling-air intake at the front only opens when required. Audi has also developed new aerodynamically optimised wheels and what it calls 'gap reducers' around the wheel arches, helping smooth the airflow around an area of the car that can otherwise generate considerable turbulence.
Even the door handles have been redesigned. Rather than conventional mechanical handles, the A2 e-tron uses electrically operated units integrated closely into the sides of the car.
At the front, the main headlights and sensors are incorporated into a dark 'black panel', with slim daytime running lights positioned above them. The roof then flows towards a defined rear spoiler, while a horizontal lighting treatment visually widens the rear of the car.
The overall result is clean and relatively minimalist without making the A2 e-tron look like a generic compact EV.
Audi's Most Efficient Production Car Yet
Efficiency goes considerably further than the bodywork.
Audi will offer the A2 e-tron with four different power outputs and three battery capacities: 52kWh, 61kWh and 84kWh.
Power ranges from 125kW and 350Nm in the entry version through to 240kW and 545Nm in the most powerful model. All versions use rear-wheel drive.
The particularly significant model from an efficiency perspective is the 140kW version equipped with Audi's optional efficiency package. Audi quotes consumption of 12.8kWh/100km, making it the most energy-efficient Audi series-production model to date.
Maximum range varies considerably depending on battery and powertrain:

The most powerful 240kW version can also accelerate from 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds, demonstrating that the emphasis on efficiency hasn't completely replaced the performance traditionally associated with Audi.
A Surprisingly Spacious Interior
The A2 e-tron's unusual proportions have allowed Audi to concentrate heavily on interior space.
The centrepiece is what Audi calls the Softwrap, a fabric-covered surface running across the dashboard, doors and into the rear of the cabin.
An optional panoramic glass roof measures around 1.6 square metres, while the centre console has been freed up by moving the gear selector onto the steering column.
There is also a new wireless charging area capable of holding two smartphones simultaneously, with Qi 2.2-compatible charging at up to 25 watts.
Boot capacity stands at 396 litres, increasing to 1,336 litres with the rear seats folded. Certain versions also gain an additional 13-litre front storage compartment.
For a compact electric car, packaging clearly remains one of the A2's central themes.
Audi Introduces Fidlock to the Car Interior
One of the more unusual features is the integration of Fidlock mounting points.
Commonly associated with cycling and outdoor equipment, Fidlock combines magnets with a mechanical locking mechanism.
Audi has integrated the system into the A2 e-tron's centre console, allowing accessories including cupholders, storage equipment and charging cable bags to be clicked securely into place.
Audi says it is the first premium car manufacturer to integrate the patented system as standard equipment.
It's a small detail, but one that fits with the A2's broader theme of making the interior more modular and practical rather than simply adding more screens.
The A2 Is Back – But Not as We Knew It
Bringing back the A2 name could easily have been little more than a nostalgic exercise. Audi appears to have taken a different approach.
The new Audi A2 e-tron takes several of the principles that made the original car unusual – aerodynamic efficiency, intelligent packaging, low weight and unconventional thinking – and applies them to a modern electric platform.
Its 12.8kWh/100km headline efficiency figure is particularly significant at a time when much of the EV market has concentrated on increasingly large battery packs.
Instead, Audi is making the argument that better aerodynamics, smarter battery technology and reduced energy consumption can be just as important.
Whether the new A2 e-tron becomes as distinctive a chapter in Audi's history as the original remains to be seen, but it certainly isn't simply another electric SUV added to the range. It represents a noticeably different direction for Audi's smallest electric model – and potentially a preview of how the company intends to approach compact electric cars in the years ahead.
